Why granting and denying matter
Tribute collection is not automatic. Even if a village lies inside a kingdom’s borders and generates tributes, they can only be collected when certain conditions are met. The two key mechanics are:
- Granting protection – only villages of players who are not members of the kingdom can pay tributes if protection is granted to them. Political members of the kingdom are automatically considered protected.
- Denying tributes – governors can refuse to let rulers collect their tributes.
Both rules together decide whether tributes are available to the kingdom.
Granting protection
Protection can be granted to villages that belong to players outside of the kingdom, as long as those villages lie inside the kingdom’s influence area. Political members of the kingdom (governors, dukes, kings, vice kings) already have protection automatically and do not need to be granted it.
Effects of protection:
- The protected village cannot be conquered by members of that kingdom while protection is active.
- Tributes can be collected from the village, if the owner does not deny them.
- The anti-conquest effect remains for 72 hours after protection ends.
Protection can be removed by the king or vice king attacking the village. Even a single unit in a raid that dies is enough to revoke it. Dukes cannot remove protection.
Denying tributes
Every governor can choose to deny tributes from each of their villages. This is done in the Kingdom Overview → Tributes tab, by switching the toggle for the selected village.
Effects of denying tributes:
- Tributes still accumulate in the tribute fund.
- They cannot be collected by the kingdom while denial is active.
- They can still be plundered by enemy attacks.
- You can raid your own village to claim the tribute resources yourself. This is especially useful if you denied tributes to a foreign kingdom, because it prevents them from attacking the village to take those resources.
When to deny tributes:
- For villages outside your own kingdom’s borders, check carefully if it is useful to refuse tributes. This can help you secure the resources for yourself instead of letting another kingdom take them.
- For villages inside your own kingdom, always discuss with your king before using the deny option. Denying tributes in this case reduces the shared resource pool and can create conflicts within the kingdom.
Hate
If a king or vice king attacks a neutral or foreign governor inside their borders, that governor develops hate.
- Hate prevents tribute collection until it is resolved.
- The king can send a peace offer. If the player accepts, hate is removed.
- Attacks on governors who are already political members of the kingdom do not cause hate.
Practical tips
- If your tributes are not being collected, check both your denial toggle and whether your village has protection.
- As a king, grant protection to villages of non-members inside your borders to collect tributes from them, but remember that this also prevents your members from conquering them.
- • As a governor, denying tributes can be useful temporarily, but it may affect your relations within the kingdom.
